Chic Simplicity

Valeria is a master basket weaver and leader of our small community of female artisans. in San Luis Amatlán.

She lives with her husband and teenage daughter, and while her husband farms the local land, Valeria collects the discarded palm leaves to create her exquisite baskets. This incredible skill was passed on from her mother, who started teaching Valeria to weave when she was just 8 years old.

Her favourite colours to work with are pink and yellow, but she particularly enjoys creating baskets out of undyed fibres. The chic simplicity of Valeria’s natural baskets really encapsulate how our baskets unify traditional handicrafts and a modern aesthetic.

Valeria is also in charge of quality control for The Artisan Partnership, which means she checks every single basket we produce to check they are ready to take pride of place in their new homes.

In her free time, Valeria looks after the rows and rows of cactus plants that surround her home, and she also makes incredible mole, a traditional Mexican sauce that can contain up to 30 types of chili pepper!
